The concert was good, I had a really good time and I knew alot of the songs. Thought I might know about 1 because I stopped listening to Sonic Youth a while back when they went all experimental (read noisy).
It was a small venue - like festival hall in briz and smaller than the enmore theatre.
It was 90-95% Chinese. I thought perhaps it would be 40% laowai. So that was good.
We stood up central position.
People did not yell out encore, more or any English or Chinese. I was too self conscious to start yelling out in English. I dont know if anyone around me would understand. I guess the Chinese thought Sonic Youth would not understand Chinese.
So we kinda clapped in rhythm for our encore.
They played songs from a variety of there albums. Towards the end I went up the front. It was quite exhilirating all the dancing. It was a great concert. They played really well live. And even some of those experimental sounding songs (like the ones on Washing Machine) that I don't like. I think I can understand and appreciate them more now. I think those songs are meant for a live audience.
Some girl threw here opaque white stockings onto the stage. Thurston Moore put them on his microphone. Then went "naah, too rock n roll"
They talked a little towards the end. John was hoping they would say something in Chinese. As if. They just said - we are really glad to be in beijing, you guys are really great. blah blah.
No one stage dived. People were attempting but didnt. But yeah I was worried about being kicked in the face when people were lifted above the crowd. I thought "oh know, I dont want to go to a Chinese hospital". Please let me get kicked in the face in Australia where I can have western medical facilities and English speaking doctors". In fact I dont know how to get to the hospital in China. Or how bloody expensive it would be. scary.
In the song 'Cool thing' Kym Gordon said the normal "are you going live like us girls in male white corporate oppression" and also something about putting up with George Bush.
The mike didnt work. Kyms. she was pretty annoyed. she is quite scowly really. quite cranky. and some of the crowd were complaining. thurston was like ---- 'good times to be had by all, its all good, its all cool" kinda thing. but she also seems quite caring. we waited 2 hours till the show started. she said --- sorry you guys had to wait. I really love the way she moves. it was great to watch. she goes off.
I had a really good time :)
