故宫 The Forbidden City

The Forbidden City has 9,999 rooms.

It is where the Emperor, Empress, Concubines and Eunuchs which would serve the royal family.

It was off limits to commoners.

It is surrounded by a moat. It used to be heavily guarded. If anyone was to cross the moat arrows would be shot at him or her.

It has red walls and doors. With gold, green, yellow and sometiems blue trimmings.

RED: happiness, auspiciousness
Yellow: royalty

It was built by 100,000 craftsmen and millions of laborers.

The gates and buildings have names such as

Hall of supreme harmony, Hall of literary flowers, Palace of heavenly purity, Palace of earthly tranquility, Hall of celestial and terestial union, Hall of mental cultivation, Palace of Quintessence, Palace of abstinence, Hall to usher in happiness, Palace of great brilliance etc

there are gargoyles of immortals, dragons, phoenixes, lions, sea horses and fish

The hall of Supreme harmony has paintings, statues etc of dragons. They have counted 13,844 dragons in this room alone.

Since Emperor Qianlong Emperors have always drank spring water from Mount Yuquan on the outskirts of Beijing. Emperor Qianlong tasted spring water from every spring and well in beijing and decided that Mount Yuquan's water was the clearest. He gave the spring title "First Fountain in the World"

Foreigners at the innauguration at the imperial palace.

Emperor Yongle invited many foreigners to the 'house warming' of the imperial palace.

Gaisudan from Persia was one of them. he said 200,000 soldiers were guarding the palace, people where forbidden to wear white ( a colour of mourning in China),

Pu Yi was the last emperor of China. He was 3yo when he suceeded the throne. 1908-1912
He was influecned by modern trends. telephone, bath tub, bike, cars, cooks to make western food,

In 1945 when the Japanese surrendered he announced his resignation and was arrested by the soviet union and sent to prision. He was released in 1959 and was assigned a job at the Beijing Botanical Gardens. He died of illness October, 1967,The Forbidden City has 9,999 rooms.
